Shelter Building

School of the Wild
By Mrs. Thomson

During the week of October 6th, Easton Valley 5th graders took part in School of the Wild (SOW)—a weeklong outdoor education experience marking our fifth year of participation. This unique program is a partnership between Andrew School, Easton Valley School, Jackson County Conservation, and the University of Iowa. Funding is generously provided by REAP, the Community Foundation of Jackson County, and Friends of Jackson County Conservation.

Throughout the week, students engaged in hands-on learning focused on nature and science. Topics included archaeology, geology, woodlands, prairie ecosystems, ponds, birds, and survival skills.

A highlight of the week was Survival Day, featuring four exciting rotations: kayaking, fire starting, shelter building, and a new addition—disc golf. This disc golf course held special significance, as it was originally planted by the current 6th grade class back in 2024. It was rewarding to see how much it had grown and how the course had taken shape.

Each rotation was led by one of the program’s leaders: Ms. Highnam and Mrs. Thomson from Easton Valley, Ms. Ploessl from Andrew School, and a staff member from Jackson County Conservation. Their knowledge and enthusiasm made the experience both educational and memorable.

Students loved learning in this outdoor classroom and walked away with a stronger connection to the natural world.
