Innovate 120 UX Intern Spotlight: Allison Westerlund
Allison is diving deep into digital strategy through the Innovate 120 UX Design internship, where she’s working on a challenge for the City of Maquoketa and Jackson County Tourism to boost local travel and economic activity. A junior at Easton Valley High School, Allison quickly stood out for her creativity and curiosity.
“I didn’t realize how much goes on behind the scenes in UX,” she said. “It’s about understanding people before you ever start designing.”
Allison plans to study Aerospace Engineering at Iowa State University, with a minor in Business. Her balance of technical thinking and communication has made her a strong collaborator on her team.
“Allison asks insightful questions and brings a thoughtful perspective,” said Jason Landa, one of the program’s mentors. “She has a natural ability to connect ideas and users.”

Innovate 120 UX Intern Spotlight: Tyson Tubbs
Tyson is returning to the Innovate 120 UX Design internship with new purpose and maturity. As part of the Scotts Miracle-Gro team, he’s using technology to develop ideas that inspire more young people to start gardening. A junior at Easton Valley High School, Tyson brought valuable experience from his previous year in the program.
“I’ve learned how to design better with the user in mind,” he said. “It’s not just about what I think—it’s about what works for someone else.”
Tyson is active in several agricultural programs and is considering studying engineering at the University of Northern Iowa. His steady leadership helped guide his team through the design process.
“Tyson brings calm, thoughtful energy to his team,” said Robert Abbott, one of the program’s mentors. “He’s grown into a role model who leads by example.”
